The Great Dane - A Gentle Giant

Have you ever seen someone walk his Great Dane around the neighborhood? Everybody’s reaction would most probably be like “Who’s walking who?”

The Great Dane is identified as the “Apollo of the Dog World”. This breed existed from way back the Fourth Dynasty. Danes were known as good fighter and hunters during the Middle Ages. They were even recognized to be the best wild boar hunters of their time. You could even see them performing in Roman circuses.

The Great Dane is thought of to have descended from 2 breeds; namely, the Greyhound and the Mastiff. Although Denmark could be acknowledged for the evolution of today’s Great Dane, the original breed was protected and preserved by the women of Germany during the chaotic world wars.

Despite her enormous size, the Great Dane is not at all aggressive -- in nature -- but is, in fact, very friendly and lovable. Along with her gallant physical features, superior intelligence and great character, the Great Dane is a very faithful and dependable dog.

However, this outstanding dog isn’t just for anyone. The Great Dane needs to be fed right because of her big built -- and this could be very expensive -- and she has to have her regular exercise in order for her to stay happy and in shape. Much attention is required from the owner to the dog.

If you’re interested of caring for a Great Dane, you must prepare yourself for the expenses you’ll make to ensure proper dog care for her; that includes her food and other needs. You will also need enough space for her daily exercise requirements. Don’t assume that one can of dog food or a daily walk around the park would be enough for a Great Dane. Her big build will definitely require more.

But if you’re really looking for a good and loyal companion -- regardless of the costs -- the Great Dane might just be the right dog for you. Throughout the ages, this breed has shown a level of unwavering devotion -- to her owners -- that no other breed could match. You can just ask how satisfied Great Dane owners are of their pet. All the money you’ll spend will be worth it.

This gentle giant comes in many different coats, including black, blue, harlequin, brindle and fawn. Its tremendous body includes approximately a 13-inch long head -- from the tip of the nose to the rear skull -- and a 32-inch shoulder to ground elevation. Along with her muscular physique is her great strength and galloping power.

The Great Dane, despite of her size, is considered to be one of the most sensitive and gentle dogs on the planet. She is very playful and obedient. She would absolutely make a good pet. Although the Great Dane is not aggressive by nature, this doesn’t hinder her from being a great watchdog and protector. Thieves would surely be hesitant to steal from your home if they see a Great Dane watching over your property. So whether you want a watchdog, a companion or just a pet, the Great Dane would definitely make an excellent choice.
